Frequently Asked Questions about the RS Class Diesel Electric Submarines and Manned Submersibles:

Q: How deep? How fast?

A: The RS-2 dives to 700 feet and cruises at 8 knots.

Q: How long? How heavy?

A: The RS-2 is 48 feet long and weigh 48 tons.

Q: Is this submarine safe?

A: Design parameters on the RS Submarines exceed all international safety requirements. All of our submarines are built and maintained to GL certification standards and are fully insured.

Q: What differs submarines from submersibles?

A: Typically, a submersible must be deployed and recovered by a large, weather sensitive and costly surface vessel. Submersibles travel slowly, as their only requirement is to descend, operate in a small area and return to the surface. Mission duration is usually short (just a few hours) as battery complements and work space is limited in size. Submarines on the other hand are autonomous and carry a power plant, be it diesel or nuclear. They tend to be streamlined for speed and have greater range capabilities. Keep in mind that these terms are sometimes interchanged. Our submarines do not require a large surface vessels for support, deployment or retrieval.

Q: What amenities does the your submarines have onboard?

A: Our vessels have a host of amenities that provide both livability and comfort for the crew. Onboard is a galley equipped with refrigeration, stove, oven, sink and eating area. There are two berths, a head and sanitation space, ship command station, an engineering space and surface bridge / viewing station. The interior has ample space providing comfort on long missions. The vessels are equipped with both heating and air conditioning.
